Takata is a well-known airbag
manufacturer that recently pled guilty to criminal charges as a result of their
defective airbags. Forbes recently covered the Takata airbag recall and the consequences of their actions. They were fined $1
billion for mishandling the reporting of their faulty airbags, $25
million to U.S. regulators, $850 in recall expenses and required to
set aside $125 million for restitution to drivers injured or killed as a result
of their faulty airbags.
Takata Airbag Recall
Accident and test data showed that
Takata airbags installed in Ford’s Ranger pickups were likely to
rupture on impact, sending debris into the face of the driver. As a result,
Ford has advised almost 30,000 Ranger owners to stop driving their vehicles
right away.
Takata’s defective airbags are
installed in over 40 million vehicles and have been sold for over a
decade. Most of their airbags have yet to be replaced due to availability
issues of proper airbag replacements. As a result, Ford dealers have been
instructed to pick up Ranger vehicles at Ford’s expense and to provide their
drivers with loaner vehicles until the airbags can be replaced.
Takata was found to have provided
misleading and untrue information about the faulty airbags to Volkswagen, Honda,
Mazda, Ford, BMW, Audi and more. You can find out if your vehicle was affected
by checking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. If you
