Liability Car Insurance & How Much You Need

Everybody needs liability car insurance in Stuart FL

Liability Insurance is what protects you from losing everything if you’re sued for causing an accident. It pays the costs of anyone and anything else involved and protects your assets if you’re sued.

It’s extremely important to have the correct amount of liability insurance to cover the value of your assets and the combined value of your total savings and property. In Florida, drivers are not legally required to carry liability insurance.

Since everyone’s situation is different, it’s imperative that you do business with a reputable insurance company and are serviced by a reputable agent. Be wary of generic liability coverage recommendations: the more you own, the more liability insurance you should have.

There are two main types of liability car insurance:

  • Bodily injury liability, which covers medical expenses and lost wages for other drivers, passengers and bystanders or pedestrians injured in the crash
  • Property damage liability, which pays to repair or replace others’ vehicles and valuables, as well as damage to their property

Liability limits are shown as three numbers, referring to the most your insurer will pay for an accident you cause. For instance, 100/300/50 liability limits cover up to:

  • $100,000 for injuries per person
  • $300,000 for injuries total, per accident
  • $50,000 for property damage per accident

Your insurance professional should also explain other coverage available for you to purchase, such as Personal injury protection insurance (PIP), medical payments coverage (MedPay), uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage and umbrella policies.
