From a lawyer’s perspective, the recent news involving a hidden video camera in the locker room of 6th grade girls emphasizes the need for schools to be extremely vigilant in monitoring people who work for them.
Sexual predators will gravitate to places where there are children. People working around children cannot be left unmonitored and unsupervised around children. There must be checks and balances in place, with a clear requirement for reporting any unusual behavior of employees.
The culture of institutions must change from one of denial and cover-up to one of active policies and procedures that recognize that sexual predators will find a way inside the institution, and the only way to stop them is to actively seek them out and stop them. This is the responsibility of the school.
