The mother ended up forcing her two boys to take morphine and then left them to die in a running car in her garage. One boy escaped, but the other perished.
Had the psychologist warned someone that this mother was abusing her children, this tragedy could have been prevented.
A Florida District Court ruled last year that a psychologist treating a minor has the obligation to warn the child’s parents and then the proper authorities if he/she learns through treatment that the child is being abused or has been abused by one or both of the parents. By holding mental health counselors accountable for the well-being of their underage clients, this decision will likely save many lives.
