Florida Psychologists Must Report Child Abuse

Child Sexual Abuse

The Law Office of Gloria Seidule handles many serious cases, and Gloria Seidule is especially experienced with sexual abuse cases.

Sexual abuse is a serious issue, and it’s, unfortunately, more common than one would like to imagine. Sexual abuse can be committed on an adult or minor, but it’s more commonly found with children. Most of those abused are violated by people they know and places they frequent like school, church, after-school events, extracurricular sports or even at home.

In one particular Florida case, a psychologist learned that a mother was abusing her children. The psychologist did not mention this to the children’s father or the authorities. The mother ended up forcing her two boys to take morphine and then left them to die in a running car in her garage. One boy escaped, but the other perished.

Had the psychologist warned someone that this mother was abusing her children, this tragedy could have been prevented.

A Florida District Court ruled last year that a psychologist treating a minor has the obligation to warn the child’s parents and then the proper authorities if he/she learns through treatment that the child is being abused or has been abused by one or both of the parents. By holding mental health counselors accountable for the well-being of their underage clients, this decision will likely save many lives.

Sexual abuse is a growing problem in the United States, and it’s becoming more common in Florida. If your child tells you that he/she has been sexually abused or you suspect he/she may have been, take action and defend your child’s rights and well-being.

Attorney Gloria Seidule has more than 20 years experience dealing with personal injury law, including sexual abuse. She stands up for the rights of both adults and children who have been the victims of such terrible acts.
