Coronavirus Update #3 – The Next Steps

coronavirus update

Hi, my name is Gloria Seidule. I’m a personal injury lawyer who specializes in infectious disease and infection control. This is the third in my series on the Coronavirus and it is an update as of March 17th, 2020.

So now we have gone from containment, which is what my first series talked about, and now we’ve moved forward into what I’m going to call, unfortunately, Lockdown from a risk management standpoint, which is what I do for a living. I sue people for the lack of risk management, essentially. This country needs to be locked down. This is the strategy that we have seen work in other countries who had the Coronavirus spread in their country at a faster rate. Then it got to our country. We are now in that stage where we’re going to have testing available. We’re going to start seeing the numbers climb.

I am advocating at this point that the United States be ahead of the curve. What do we know? We know that the numbers are increasing. We know that our healthcare system is not equipped for the kinds of numbers of people that we could see that become seriously ill and need medical treatment. We also know that there are not enough respirators and ventilators to go around in this country. I love the American response. Let’s have drive-throughs where we can go and get tested for Covid-19 only if you are sick. That’s a great response. What’s going to happen with that? The numbers are going to go up and all the people that test, positive or sick, are going to have to self isolate. So my theory is: let’s just lock down the country.

Now the kids are all off from spring break. They’re all home from school already anyway. So if you are out and about and you are traveling, you are on spring break or you are going somewhere that you’re not going to be home. We’re going to give you a specific amount of time to get yourself home and announce now that this country is going to go on a lockdown. Why is the lockdown necessary? Because people aren’t going to stay home and it’s just going to get worse and worse and worse, and we need to allow our healthcare system to set up. To get ready, we need to have the military come in and set up hospitals that are designed to have infection control and treat the ill.

We need time to train healthcare workers. We need time to train the people and provide them materials. The people that work in nursing homes, especially in my home state of Florida, where we have a very elderly population. And last but not least, we need to provide everybody in this country with a mask. Everybody should have a mask to wear. I know that sounds extreme, but right now – I don’t know about you – but it’s very difficult to find a mask anywhere in this country.

These are tough times. These are scary times. But if we put everybody into a lockdown right now, everybody will have a time period where they can stop, take a deep breath, stay away from other people, and hopefully slow down the spread of the Coronavirus.

I will be continuing this series on the Coronavirus as long as possible. I will even do it remotely if necessary. But in the meantime, if you have any legal questions, please feel free to call my office and stay safe out there.
