What is MRSA?

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a staph infection that is highly contagious  and resistant to most types of antibiotics.  If left untreated, it can result in severe disability or death. Once you have MRSA, you will always be colonized, or a carrier of the bacteria. It can lie dormant in your system and be activated with subsequent procedures or trauma. It is acquired in hospitals, doctor’s offices, schools, nursing homes, gyms and jails. The only way to prevent an infection is proper sanitary procedures in these facilities.

Where Does MRSA Come From?

It is believed MRSA developed through overuse of antibiotics. The germ became resistant to normal antibiotics because they were over-prescribed by doctors. The bacteria morphed into a super germ capable of resisting antibiotics. New antibiotics were developed to combat MRSA, but the germ is now morphing into VRE (Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus) There is very little, if any, line of resistance to this bacteria.

The MRSA infection originated in hospitals and seeped into the community by doctors discharging patients with active infections who are highly contagious into the community. Community Acquired MRSA of the skin has become very common because the germ lives on surfaces for many weeks. If an open area of skin touches the infected surface, the skin can become infected. These types of skin infections are seen most commonly found in hospitals, jails, nursing homes and schools.

Surgical Site Infections

Surgical site infections occur within 48 hours to one year of the surgery. The bacteria starts to eat away soft tissue from the deep tissue  and can result in severe injury or death if not treated properly. SSI’s (surgical site infections) are the fault of the health care providers. These types of infections occur because of lack of sanitary procedures in the operating room.Hospital Profits MRSA

Medicare is no longer reimbursing hospitals for Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI). Hospitals were making profits from staph infections they caused, but the government has now stopped reimbursing hospitals for this negligence. This is designed to motivate American hospitals to implement infection control programs to stop the spread of hospital acquired infections.

Is MRSA Preventable?

Yes!  Many hospitals in the world have eliminated or significantly reduced hospital acquired infections. Infections are not an acceptable risk of hospitalization. Many times, the infection is worse than the original reason for hospitalization.
